`` I Have A Dream, And Florence Kelley s Speech On Child...

Speeches are dreaded by many. The fear of public speaking is one that is engraved into most people’s brains at an early age. There are many great speeches known to man; the Gettysburg Address, Martin Luther King Jr s â€Å"I Have a Dream† and the two that will be contrasted in this essay; Sojourner Truth’s â€Å"Ain’t I Woman† and Florence Kelley s speech on child labor and women s suffrage. Both of these speeches were given at women’s rights conventions, Truth’s in 1851 in Ohio and Kelley’s in 1905 in Philadelphia. Although the two speakers are opposites (Kelley being an educated white woman and Truth being a freed slave who often shows her illiteracy throughout her speech) they both depend on rhetorical questions, exemplification, repetition, and with these devices, their establishment of pathos to encourage and call their audience to action. While Florence Kelley’s speech does well, Sojourner Truth’s is more eff ective due to the fact that she pinpoints the enemy and draws her audience together with her word choice. Kelley asks the questions â€Å"If the mothers and the teachers of Georgia could vote, would the Georgia Legislature have refused at every session for the last three years to stop the work in the mills of children under twelve years of age?† and â€Å"Would the New Jersey Legislature have passed that shameful repeal bill enabling girls of fourteen years to work all night, if the mothers of New Jersey were enfranchised?†, which would be answered by her audience as â€Å"yes†. The Opposite Sex Free Essays

Well, I have now been going out with the most interesting woman I could ever meet. She is called Lolita, she is 28 and lives in a Manchester flat. She is a kind and thoughtful woman who is always up for a laugh and she is also in a way slightly aggressive as she cannot control herself at times. But in my opinion there is a flaw to her which in a way annoys me because I don’t understand it. The problem is that I cannot understand the mind of the opposite sex. I think that I start to understand her, and then I’m lost and confused. I met her at a concert, over the Christmas holidays. We have been going out ever since. I think that she is wonderful, but she is so confusing to me. For example, what happened the other night. We were watching a film, ‘Saving Private Ryan’. At parts I got a bit upset, not emotional, but it made my go â€Å"aww†, and the odd thing that Loli did was that when the dying captain whispered the words in the young privates ear and then died, not even a blink. When the German sniper got shot through the eye, and the Germans all being shot after the wall fell, she was distraught. I thought it was because it seemed such a cold and evil death, but when the Jew was killed by the man who the party saved him, not even a squeak. This I did not understand a bit. At one point I thought that she was a Nazi. But I think that the cold killings and disgusting scenes were the problem, and then by the end of the film she was used to it. Nothing really to get upset over though. Once I was talking about PMT. This was at the start of our relationship and I hadn’t known her that long. Before with previous girlfriends and my sister, they all made sarcastic laughs or smirked. I assumed that, that was the same with most women and could laugh at there own problems, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. We had just had a small drink with some of our mates, we only had two drinks and we then went home. I had decided previously to stay the night at her house, so I walked home with her. We got home and we sat down. She had the idea of getting a takeaway. So I told her what I wanted. This was 7:30 when I decided.. It took till 8:00 to order the meal as she didn’t know whether to order an Indian or a Chinese, and then what she wanted to order. Loli now got a bit edgy as she was so hungry, and then dipstick here decided to discuss PMT, to try and cheer her up as there was just a report about it on the news. Oh how I should not have gone their, I haven’t forgotten it and I don’t think I ever will. What happened was that I started off by repeating something that the reporter had said, I questioned her PMT. I started, â€Å"You know, that could be right. I mean PMT was only invented in the 1950’s.† I looked at her, she was giving me an icy stare that would have made Cybil Fawlty jealous. My mistake was to continue, that stare was a warning. But I didn’t stop, and then all of a sudden. Poof! Loli had sent a cushion flying across the room and it smacked me in the gob. The zip even caught me in the cheek. â€Å"†What was that for?† â€Å"Can’t you take a hint?† she barked. â€Å"There was no need for that, it really hurt. I didn’t know you were so touchy about it.† â€Å"Just don’t do it again, you have no idea how much that sort of thing winds me up.† No-one has ever done that to me over a joke that isn’t personal. And I think that if I did it again we would get into a big argument. That made me think that it didn’t take much to get her upset, it made me a bit weary. Those are the bad things, but there is also good in everyone, even Hitler. It was my birthday three weeks ago. My 24th. I was just expecting to have a drink with my mates, maybe a party at my house which I had organised. I got something much better than that. I woke up slightly late for me on the Saturday morning, my birthday. I was woken to toast, pancakes, waffles, bucks fizz, croissant, cereal, and a sausage, bacon and bean breakfast. I was gob smacked. I would probably never have this much for a five course meal, let alone breakfast. I tucked in and then got up. Scattered around the house were balloons and then downstairs was my present. à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½100 of vouchers for the local mall. We went out and I bought us lunch and a jacket for me and a DVD of U2 which Loli had her eye on. I came home and opened the door to find that I had a surprise party thrown for me and all my mates had clubbed together to buy me a 2 night holiday to Amsterdam. Then I collapsed. It was like having 8 Christmas’s rolled into one. That showed me the kind and thoughtful side to Loli. She showed me what a fantastic woman she is. I also saw the fact that I think that without each other we are useless. But I think that, that is the same with everyone. We all need the opposite sex, you can’t enjoy life being a hermit. Sub-problem Work overload These managers will expect their employees to work only to follow the orders that they are giving and this may not be acceptable, especially with employee who have been in the organization for quite some time or with employees who are senior and have worked previously in an open culture (Sibson 1994). Solution If the management has decided to downsize the employees then they will have to communicate the same clearly to the employees. The management should also make the existing employees feel secure so that they can concentrate on their job rather than that of looking for a new job. Problem Excess workload Excess workload is one of the reasons due to which the employee may think of leaving the organization as there will be certain impact on their productivity. If an employee is overloaded with plenty of things to do then the productivity will be reduced as the employee will be occupied with unwanted things. Sub-problem Health of employees This will force the employee to stretch after the office working hours as well and hence, the employee will look for reasons to leave the job wherein their roles and responsibilities are properly defined. 3 out of 12 employees suffer from backache, headache and other such health concerns due to the excess workload. This excess workload will also create an impact on the health of the employees (Emese 2013). Solution It is the responsibility of the management to hire resources as per the requirement. If the management thinks that the employees are overloaded then they should understand the working hours of the employees and then accordingly hire resources. This will keep the work environment healthy and happy. If the management thinks that the overtime is becoming frequent among employees then the employees should be motivated with paying them an overtime bonus. If the morale of the employees is not boosted then the employees will leave the organization and the cost of training the new employees will be more than that retaining the old employees. Conclusion It is the responsibility of the management to understand and address the issues that the employees are facing so that the issues can be sorted out. If the employees are not motivated then the employees will be productive. The management can meet up with the employees, understand their concern and make changes in the policy accordingly so that the employees are happy and the output is high. Since The Evolution Of Man, Infants Have Been Born With Severe Illness

Since the evolution of man, infants have been born with severe illnesses. These infants may be able to survive due to advancing technologies, but are left with possible and probable defects. Many infants will die even though they are being treated because they are not equipped to sustain life. These circumstances have led to the debatable issue of infant euthanasia, or mercy killing, to allow these babies an end to their suffering, and die peacefully. While many people feel that euthanasia is murder, infant euthanasia should be legalized to spare terminally ill newborns of long, painful deaths, and to spare them of possible life-long disabilities. Euthanasia is said to be morally wrong by pro-life groups. They point out that infant's may not be suffering while they are dying. They also emphasize that advances in pain management make it possible to relieve all or almost all pain. These people say that children should be saved at all costs, no matter how great the disability may be. They accentuate that the infants may be saved due to advancing technology, and that there are also therapy treatments for their possible disabilities. However, in considering whether or not to treat a newborn, the main goal should be to spare infants of long, painful deaths. Most experts believe that the primary answer to this issue is to follow what's in the child's best interests. If his mental and physical handicaps are overwhelming and it would be inhumane to prolong his life, then treatment should be withheld or withdrawn. After all, saving an infant for a life of suffering is hardly a humane and loving act. An infant was born with a skin condition similar to third-degree burns over almost all of its body for which there was no cure. The baby's mother was young, unwed, and indigent. Providing basic nursing care caused tearing away of the skin. The infant could not be fed orally because of blistering in the mouth and throat. Any movement of the infant seemed to cause it pain. Even with intensive care its life expectancy, at most, was believed to be days. It would have been reasonable, merciful, and justifiable to have short ened the baby's dying by an intended direct action chosen by the parent and the neonatologists. In cases relevantly like this, it is not immoral or morally wrong to intend and effect a merciful end to a life that, all things considered, will be meaningless to the one who lives it and an unwarranted burden for others to support. Among the women who work in the Stanford intensive care nursery, several said that if they were to have an extremely premature baby, they would not want it to be treated aggressively. One woman said that if she knew what was about to happen she would stay away from a hospital with a sophisticated intensive care unit. Others say they would make sure they were under the care of a doctor who would not press the extremes on survival. Many parents would make a similar choice but are not given the opportunity. It has been called a violation of God's commandment not to kill. "...in effect, the demand that physicians fight death at all costs is a demand that they pl ay God. It is a demand that they conquer nature, thereby declaring themselves more powerful than God's order." Perhaps the ideal of conquest will be replaced by the ideal of living in agreement with nature. The most benign technology works in harmony with natural causes rather than intruding on them. The "Baby Doe" rule is a list of guidelines stating that a baby should be treated aggressively with very few exceptions. These exceptions to the rule are when "the infant is chronically and irreversibly comatose", when the treatment would merely prolong dying, not be effective in ameliorating or correcting all of the infant's life-threatening conditions, or otherwise be futile in terms of the survival of the infant", and when "treatment would be virtually futile in terms of the survival of the infant and the treatment itself under such circumstances would be inhumane..." Vodafone has also not focused their business operations in the US. Therefore, they do not maximize on the thriving demand created by mainstream American firms and entrepreneurs. In terms of opportunities, Vodafone have developed innovations in mobile commerce that seek to fuse banking with mobility that will see an increase in their revenues. Vodafone launched the mobile money transfer service, M-PESA along with Safaricom Kenya, which brought new dimensions to mobile banking. Vodafone has also launched the mHealth Solutions which is the application of mobile communications to healthcare. Apart from these products, Vodafone also launched the cheapest phone aimed for the developing world. The most dominant threat in this market is the constant change in technological approaches. The telecommunications market is characterized by a dynamic competition that constantly seeks to innovate and experiment with new ideas. Consequently, this competitive environment always threatens Vodafone with being edged out of the market. Vodafone has taken a strategy of buying out other networks in order to reduce competition within a particular market segment. However, small network operators operating as mobile virtual network operators have lowered this barrier significantly with differentiated products alongside services identifying them as new entrants. Key suppliers of Vodafone have had less muscle to bargain owing to lack of technical advantages as well as the looming Chinese entrants who pursue cost leadership. Vodafone has responded to this by integrating all her key business activities hence leveraging their economies of scale. The Idea of Existentialism in The Stranger :: Literary Analysis, Albert Camus

Existentialism is defined as "a philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining his or her own development through acts of the will†. In other words, existentialism it emphasizes individual freedom. Throughout The Stranger, the amount of existentialism views is abundant. The use of Mersault’s experiences covey the idea that human life has no meaning except for simple existence. The idea of existentialism in Albert Camus' The Stranger reflects through Mersault's life experiences with his relationship with Marie, the death of his mother Maman, the murdering of the Arab, and Mersault's trial and execution, all these events show that Mersault’s life of no meaning. The death of Maman in The Stranger conveys an example of existentialism. The phlegmatic and unattached response to the death of his mother shows an excellent example of Mersault’s existentialism; he accepts life or death without looking for a deeper significance. Mersault receives a telegram from the home notifying him of his mother’s death, â€Å"Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don't know. I got a telegram from the home: ‘Mother Deceased. Funeral Tomorrow. Faithfully yours.’†(Camus 3). When he gets to the home he does not even want to see the body, instead of mourning he sits back and relaxes drinking coffee and smoking. Mersault seems more concerned about taking time off of work to go to his mother’s funeral that he has nothing to do with, than the actual death of his mother. The first thought of his day is about work, â€Å"As I was waking up, it came to me why my boss had seemed annoyed when I asked him for two days off†¦Ã¢â‚ ¬ (Camus 19). Mersault does not show any emotion at all while at the nursing home that Maman lived. He is just there because he feels as if he has to be. Everything about the weekend seems to annoy him events like the vigil, the funeral, and some Maman’s friends, in particular to the sobbing woman at the vigil. Another aspect of the existentialism portrayed in The Stranger is that Mersault focuses mainly on physical sensations with his relationship with Marie. Mersault believes that life has no meaning other than existence itself; so what is the purpose to love? He does nothing more than think of Marie’s physical features like her hair, smile, skin, and laughter. Mersault runs into Marie on his way to the beach for a swim and soon after he already describes her physical attributes, â€Å" I helped her onto a float as I did, I brushed against her breasts†(Camus 19).

The United States is made up of millions of people that come from different backgrounds, religions and cultures. These differences are what make America the type of place it is today, because without these differences we would be just like every other country in the world. One of the biggest resources that we would have to help find information on Diversity would be the internet and this is mainly because we can find out almost anything that we would need on a certain race or culture. An article from US Life-U. S Department of State had a quote from former U. S.  Secretary of State Colin Powell that states, â€Å"America is a nation of nations, made up of people from every land, of every race and practicing every faith. Our diversity is not a source of weakness; it is a source of strength, it is a source of our success. † That quote alone can explain the true meaning behind the diversity in America and why we are the way we are. Through all the information that I acquired during this course, I have come to a better understanding of my racial and ethnical background. I have learned that according to the American Community Survey conducted by the U.  S. Census Bureau there are roughly over 36 million Americans that claimed there American heritage and that great political figures such as John F. Kennedy had an Irish background. I have also learned that it was never easy for Irish settlers years ago, because in the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s Irish immigrants were considered poor trash and were treated as such. It took many years for the Irish to establish a good name in America and over time people would stop hiding their Irish heritage and proudly display out in the open the love of their background. It is very hard to tell what the U. S. will look like in the year 2050, because we are constantly changing and we will continue to do this throughout our time. One thing that I can say is that we will have more humans then we know what to do with, because modern medicine is figuring out new ways to help people live longer and stay healthier. As for the demographics in the U. S. go, I would have to say that all raciest will be about equal in population and the white race will no longer be the dominant race. There will be more diversity in olitics and in the media, because as of right now we have a black president and that is just the beginning of what the future will be like. It’s hard to say if there will ever be any big race wars in America, because in today’s modern world everything seems ok, but no one is ever really sure what lies beneath the surface of individual groups. There could be a great race war that might happen in the future, or everybody will finally start to accept each other and we could live a beautiful existence. The challenge that the United States faces with diversity is that everyone is diverse and the want to be proud and show there true diversity. The main problem with that is that some other cultures don’t agree with them and they might want them to change their ways, or leave. This has always been a big challenge for the United States, because as time goes on we should be comfortable with diversity and accepting it along with ours, but there always will be certain people out there that will never change and they will make sure that they are heard within any means necessary. On the other side there are many great benefits that Untied States could benefit from with being such a diverse place. The fact that there are so many different views and opinions in America of the world around them, they could never truly run out of ideas. So many cultures offer such good things to America and they will continue to keeping adding on to that list. In today’s modern society certain individuals still feel the need for racial security and what that means is that someone might still feel more comfortable around their own kind. For example; a white family starts to pack up out of their home and move away from a changing neighborhood. The family finds a place that is more suitable towards their own security which is an all white suburb. The enroll their kids in an all white school and feel that nothing bad will happen to them. Little do they know is that their son’s new friend from school is a thief and deals drugs throughout the school. As time moves on the family starts to see a change in their child’s behavior, as if he was on some sort of drug, they ignore it, because they are amongst white people are they think that things like that couldn’t happen. Fast forward a little more and the child is grown up and in jail for armed robbery. The parents are clueless and confuse, because they never thought that it would happen in an all white neighborhood. Now the point to that story is that in order to foster a climate for acceptance we need to understand that not every other race is bad or will corrupt their race; in fact if each race got together and helped one another out with this kind of problem they could share their experiences and find a proper solution for the problem. The issue with racial profiling in the media is that the reader does not understand what is going on and assumes that a certain situation is a result of that entire race. A perfect example would be the 9/11 tragedy, because after that the media and the people reading the media pretty much made it seem that the situation was a result of all Muslims, when in fact it was only a handful of people that had hateful opinions towards America. The media may not be all bad and include nothing but racial profiling; in fact the media can also showcase the coming together of different races. The media recognized that we would have a black president and that many different races had voted for him, because they felt that he could do the job right regardless of color or background. If everyone in America could understand the power that we have and this is not because we have missiles or a great army, instead it is because we have so many different cultures that bring many different things to our Nation. We would have the power of America’s spirit on our side and it would be hard to break the spirit and will power of that many different people. I am also one that sadly shown my negativity towards another race at one time and it might of not been violent, because it was only in my head, but it goes to show that almost everyone in some way and another will or have experienced that and the best way to overcome that barrio is to understand, research and understand another cultures meaning to behind what they do and then an alliance with each other could happen and we could one day become brothers and sisters of the world again.

Strawberry Dna Extraction and Quantitative Hypothesis Development

We wanted to extract, see and analyze DNA from a single strawberry( 12. 11 g). The long, thick fibers of DNA store the information for the functioning of the chemistry of life. DNA is present in every cell of plants and animals. The DNA found in strawberry cells can be extracted using common, everyday materials. To start the procedure we needed the following supplies; one strawberry, one plastic cup, 10 ml of Cell Lysis Buffer (10% detergent, 1% NaCl), one plastic zip-lock bag, one coffee filter, and 25 ml of ice cold Ethanol.The first step of the process was to obtain the weight of the plastic cup by itself, get a strawberry, remove the stem and leave, put it in the plastic cup and then record the weight of plastic cup with strawberry. The results of this first step was; weight of plastic cup: 9. 63 g, weight of plastic cup and strawberry: 21. 74 g. The following step was to place the strawberry in the zip-lock bag, close it and start smashing the strawberry until it was completely broken up, the strawberry had a smoothie-like look. 0 ml of Cell Lysis Buffer was added to the strawberry and gentle massaged it for about one minute. This buffer, which has detergent in it, is to dissolve the cell and nuclear membranes and salts to break the ionic bonds between the histones and DNA, it separates DNA from strawberry. During this step, my lab partner prepared the coffee filter to filter the solution as determine by our instructor. We pour the cell lysate on the coffee filter and allowed it to go through it, to help it, we used a spoon and gently pushed the substance to get the most liquid out of it without braking the coffee filter.Before the filtration the texture looked solid, but after it looked like strawberry juice. Our instructor added 25 ml of ice cold ethanol to the cup and obtain the DNA. We could observe a solid white, mucus like material forming out of the â€Å"juice†. The excess of liquid was removed from the cup, and the cup and DNA was weighted, resulting of 10. 81 g, which was subtracted from the cup weight, having 1. 18 g as the weight of DNA. After this, we calculated the % of the strawberry that was DNA. We concluded that the DNA from strawberry was 9. 74%

The California-Riverside Community Garden - Essay Example The purpose of establishing a garden within the campus was to ensure that the university and the community members had a place where they could grow fruits and vegetables. The location of the UCR community garden is next to the parking lot 30 close to the corner of Canyon Crest Drive, and Martin Luther King Boulevard. Notably, the Riverside region in California has a history of rigorous real estate activities. The California-Riverside community is one of the regions that experienced numerous adverse effects of the economic crisis. This factor triggered many community members to rely on soup kitchens and food banks. However, the main challenge was that the community lacked supplies of fresh produce. One of the graduates from the university named Fortino Morales initiated the idea of setting aside some space within the University for a Community Garden. In order to ensure that the idea was viable, the community coordinated by students from the University and carried a pilot project in 2009. Notably, the project faced certain challenges but proved to be successful (French). Currently, the university has a three-acre community garden that serves as evidence that the students and the community are promoters of the environmental agenda, as well as the global food initiatives. The University has proven to be environmentally friendly because of establishing this garden. When I visited the garden, a great percentage was all green while the remaining percentage was under preparation for planting. Fortino Morales, the concept developer of the UCR community garden envisioned an innovative project that would take place in phases. For this reason, the project began with a quarter an acre and later expanded to a current three acres. The garden has numerous plots ready for use by either the community members or students. Individuals willing to use the plots can access tools, seeds, as well as water free of charge. In addition, the compost used in the plots comes from the UCR dining services (French). For this reason, the community garden supports the recycling of kitchen wastes, which is a strategy of protecting the environment.
